Brand & Communication Guide for Samsonite APACCommunication Strategy

Messaging Framework
For more than a century, Samsonite has travelled alongside generations of people. It is sturdy and trusted, but when a brand becomes synonymous with your parents’ favourite luggage, it can be easy to reduce it to just that...and forget what made it so enduring in the first place.
Practice Theory partnered with Samsonite to craft a refreshed communications narrative for the Asia-Pacific region, fleshing out and structuring how to communicate their anchor idea of “Life’s a Journey” beyond mere tagline. As the lead copywriter and brand strategist, I developed the overarching narrative and messaging direction, defining tonal principles, crafting an updated brand manifesto, defining brand verticals, and identifying key storytelling/messaging angles.
Qualitative research with everyday people—not just avid travellers—revealed that not every journey is a once-in-a-lifetime escape. Some are first jobs, house moves and daily commutes, even the missteps and missed connections along the way. You know, the mundane stuff. This gave us a richer role for Samsonite as a trusted companion through life’s many movements and transitions. Its renowned durability moved past function; it was what allowed the brand to remain present through changing destinations, circumstances and generations. Rather than treating its long history as a heritage story, its commitment to innovation framed it as a vessel of endurance—familiar enough to trust, but always moving forward. “Life’s a Journey” could then hold both the extraordinary and the everyday, reconnecting Samsonite’s founding values with the realities of modern travel.
02 Define
04 Execution
Samsonite already had an enduring idea in their minor campaign tagline “Life’s a Journey”. The challenge was not to invent a new promise, but to uncover more meaning within it. In a category preoccupied with product specifications and aspirational escapes, the journey can easily become shorthand for a flight, your luggage simply something that tags along. At the same time, chasing relevance through fleeting trends or youth culture risked losing the trust and quality that had made Samsonite iconic in the first place. Diving into Samsonite’s archives and 115-year history made one thing clear: its legacy was not something to move past, but the very thing that could reconnect it with contemporary travel culture. So how could “Life’s a Journey” feel both timeless and newly relevant, while giving different markets across APAC a consistent story to tell?
From a refreshed manifesto and expanded messaging architecture to a comprehensive retail and pitch guide, we grounded the brand in four pillars—exploration, celebration, companionship, and movement. Each vertical explored a different dimension of the journey while returning to the same central idea of companionship. The framework was designed to work at multiple scales, from concise product and retail messaging to short-form video content and tagline design, shifting from purely functional messaging to a richer cultural narrative.
